Seasons

The peak seasons for trekking and sightseeing are Spring (late February to early May) and Autumn (late September to late November) At this time the weather is warm in the Kathmandu Valley and relatively mild in the mountains. Apart from late spring and early autumn, rainfall is rare and mountain views are generally uninterrupted by cloud.

Winter can be a good time to visit but the high mountains will be especially cold at this time and Kathmandu can be plagued with morning fogs, which can affect flights on occasions. It is a particularly good time to visit the jungle as the heat will be less oppressive at this time.

The summertime is the rainy season. From late May through June it gets progressively hotter with heavy thunderstorms during the evening. Once the monsoon proper breaks in early July there is daily rainfall, often of Biblical proportions. While visits during the monsoon are possible, travel can be regularly disrupted due to roads being blocked by landslides and to flights being cancelled due to poor visibility. Having said that, a monsoon visit, especially for Kathmandu sightseeing, can be very rewarding. Monsoon time is also the peak season for visits to Tibet starting in Kathmandu.
